UK Rail Industry Unites for Remembrance Day with ‘Poppy Train’ Journeys

Across the United Kingdom, train operators, manufacturers, and heritage railways have come together to mark Remembrance Day with special ‘Poppy Train‘ services. The day, which honours armed forces members who have died in the line of duty, is observed on November 11th to mark the end of World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Avanti West Coast and Alstom
In a joint effort, Avanti West Coast operated a special service from London to Liverpool, carrying veterans and a commemorative wreath. The train, a Class 390 Pendolino named “Royal British Legion” and wrapped in a full-poppy livery, was prepared for its journey by the maintenance team at Alstom’s Wolverhampton depot.

LNER’s ‘Poppy Train’
Not to be outdone, LNER launched its own dedicated ‘Poppy Train’ on the East Coast Main Line. The train, an Azuma named “For the Fallen,” is also adorned with a special livery and is operating in revenue service, carrying the remembrance message between London, Yorkshire, and Scotland.

Heritage Lines
The tradition is also being honored by the UK’s vital heritage sector. The North Norfolk Railway, for example, is running its “Poppy Line” steam trains, offering free travel to armed forces personnel and veterans, ensuring the act of remembrance connects modern technology with the industry’s historic roots.
