The commissioning of the Deux-Montagnes branch marks a major milestone for the Alstom-supplied network, cementing the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) as one of the largest automated transport systems in the world.

Montréal has solidified its position as a global leader in urban mobility with the commissioning of a new 33-kilometer segment of its Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM). The opening of the long-awaited Deux-Montagnes branch is a transformative event, nearly tripling the operational length of the network to approximately 50 kilometers.
This expansion is far more than new track; it is a massive scale-up of one of the world’s most advanced, fully driverless systems. The entire project is a turnkey solution from Alstom, which has provided the complete system, including:

  • GoA4 Driverless Technology: The network runs on Alstom’s Urbalis 400 CBTC, the highest grade of automation (GoA4). This system controls the trains, doors, and obstacle detection, and handles all emergency situations without any onboard staff.
  • Rolling Stock: The system uses Alstom’s Metropolis metro cars, designed for high capacity and reliability.
  • Predictive Maintenance: The maintenance is managed by Alstom’s HealthHub digital platform, which uses AI to monitor the health of the fleet and infrastructure in real-time.
    A Global Benchmark for Infrastructure
The REM project, managed by CDPQ Infra (a subsidiary of Quebec’s pension fund), is a globally watched model for public transport infrastructure funding and delivery. The successful launch of this 33km branch, which includes 14 new stations and complex segments like the new Mount Royal tunnel, is a major validation of this unique model.
The opening of this segment connects Montréal’s Central Station to Deux-Montagnes, slashing commute times and creating unprecedented connectivity for the metropolitan region.
To celebrate the milestone, the entire REM network will be free for all users this weekend, allowing the public to experience the new, expanded system firsthand.
