The deployment of ERTMS Level 2 technology will modernize a 70km section of the Madrid-Extremadura High-Speed Line.

A consortium formed by Hitachi Rail and Sisten has been awarded a €126.5 million contract to install advanced signalling and traffic management systems on Spain’s high-speed rail network.

The project will focus on the 70km Talayuela–Plasencia section of the Madrid–Extremadura High-Speed Line. This is a critical infrastructure project aimed at boosting connectivity and efficiency in the region.

The core of the contract is the deployment of ERTMS Level 2, the European standard for train control systems. This technology is key to enabling interoperability and improving safety and capacity on high-speed lines.
The contract includes the installation of:

  • Hitachi Rail’s ERTMS Level 2 solution
  • Signalling interlockings
  • Train protection systems
  • Fixed telecommunications
  • A Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) system for remote, real-time management
The deal also covers 48 months of maintenance for all deployed equipment, ensuring long-term operational reliability.
For Hitachi Rail, this contract strengthens its already significant presence in Spain, where its technology is deployed on over 2,800 kilometres of the country’s high-speed network. This project represents another major step in the ongoing digitalization and modernization of Europe’s rail infrastructure.
